The first BLBG meeting of 2017 is a departure from our usual format. It is held jointly with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), (but please read on especially if you are not an engineer) and the Department for International Trade (DIT) at the British Embassy. We are grateful to ICE for sponsoring the event. It will be held on Thursday 26th January, starting at our usual time of 6:30 p.m. but in the Phoenicia Hotel, Minet el Hosn.
ICE established the biennial Brunel International Lecture series in 1999. For the first time this year Beirut is included in the itinerary, something that would not have happened without the untiring efforts of Mr. Ramy El-Khoury, the ICE representative, here in Lebanon to whom we are very grateful.
The lectures are in recognition of Isambard Kingdom Brunel, an outstanding multi-disciplined British Victorian engineer. Speakers and topics are chosen to appeal to a wide audience, both engineers and non-engineers, and this year will be given by Eelco H Dykstra, MD. Entitled "From Risk to Resilience: Practice Made Perfect?" the lecture will provide attendees with a unique and region-specific perspective on emergency management. It will “explore the role engineers have to play in dealing with extreme scenarios and the importance of collaborating with all relevant stakeholders to ensure resilience of strategic infrastructure and cities as a whole”.
As ever we look forward to an interesting and lively meeting. The lecture will be a little longer than usual but we plan to complete by 8:30 as usual.
